SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

The world has become much smaller. With the internet and social media at our fingertips, we have access to more information than ever before. We are confronted daily by the social troubles faced around the world and in our own communities. Fortunately, we have also become increasingly aware of the potential impact of our individual actions, pushing us to seek new ways of engaging with our communities and working together towards social change. Social enterprise is a relatively new category of organization that combines the revenue generation of business with the social mission of charities and nonprofits. In this model, the purchase of products and services directly contributes to social good, giving us new ways to channel our efforts and impact our communities.

Through the production and sale of our jewelry, Unlocked uses business to empower people to transition out of homelessness by creating employment opportunities and wages. Each purchase directly supports the wages of our employees and allows us to provide holistic resources, forming a sustainable pathway out of homelessness and into stable housing and secure employment.

Unlocked Pathways

While we are passionate about dignified job creation, we know that a stable wage is only one piece in the foundation of a healthy life. That’s why we started Unlocked Pathways, a 6 month transitional program. With the invaluable support of local nonprofits and community resources, this program provides financial empowerment, housing, counseling, community support, and the confidence to continue working towards a brighter future. Through collaboration and individualized, holistic care, Unlocked Pathways forms a sustainable pathway out of homelessness and into stable housing and secure employment.

Wages & Financial Empowerment

Securing reliable wages and employment is an essential part of sustainably transitioning out of homelessness. At Unlocked, our Makers are paid above a living wage in Nashville, TN, which is over 65% higher than minimum wage. Each month, employees in the Pathways program take on more hours as they continue to familiarize themselves with the company, the program, and a working schedule.

Through Community Financial Resources, Unlocked also hosts weekly financial training seminars for all Makers, equipping them with a comprehensive education in personal finance. Using an app specifically designed for financial incentive tracking, Makers develop their personal budget, set goals, address potential debt, and begin saving a portion of their earnings in an Unlocked savings account. Makers are encouraged to support each other in their personal goals, creating a network of accountability and inspiration.

Together, wages and financial training empower our Makers to achieve financial security, meet their own daily needs, and save for their futures.

Housing Stability & Opportunity

It is inherently difficulty to focus on employment and budgeting skills when basic needs like shelter are not met. For employment to be truly meaningful, it must be paired with the stability that comes with housing. As such, Makers that are unhoused when they begin working with Unlocked have the ability to move into transitional housing, provided by our partner, the Community Care Fellowship. Makers are given access to this transitional housing unit for the duration of their employment at Unlocked and are expected to contribute to rent and utilities in proportion to their wages, which increase with each month of employment.

Makers continue to live in the transitional unit and work with their case management team and housing specialists at the Community Care Fellowship until they secure permanent housing.

Career Counseling & Development

Throughout the program, Makers meet regularly with a CCF career counselor who helps them identify their job skills and career aspirations, as well as assist with resume creation and interview preparation. With the security of transitional employment and housing through Unlocked, Makers can focus on building a stable career instead of rushing into a temporary job.

With the guidance of their career counselors, Unlocked Makers are expected to apply and interview with other companies until they have obtained satisfactory employment. Securing reliable income is a key component of self-sufficiency beyond the Unlocked Pathways Program. Makers can continue to work with their case management and career counseling team in the months following their transition out of Unlocked to ensure a stable transition.

Community Support

Our Makers are never alone on their journeys. Relationships are central to Unlocked, and we walk alongside our team members at every step of their process, working to build a supportive and uplifting community in everything that we do.

We promote community support, encouragement, and accountability through weekly goal setting sessions in which each team member can share their struggles and make a plan to achieve their dreams. We make sure to acknowledge and celebrate the successes of our Makers, both big and small. Beyond formal meetings, we also host monthly team bonding activities and monthly community service outings. And of course, birthdays are also celebrated with a special outing. These evenings solidify our community, build trust, and remind us of our shared journeys.

Confidence, Autonomy & Dignity

At Unlocked, we care about all aspects of our Makers’ lives. From sharing goals and celebrating wins to contributing to rent and being productive, we create opportunities for our Makers to build confidence, utilize their autonomy, and recognize the inherent dignity in themselves and others. We believe these are critical intangibles that are deeply valuable not only for those transitioning out of homelessness, but for everyone in a healthy society.
